Introduction

WhatsApp has always been on the lead when it comes to social media usage and instant texting currently having over a billion users worldwide. With WhatsApp, one can send texts, images, videos, etc. to other friends, family, and relatives. This has led to the rise of various mods that can be used to tweak the functions of the normal WhatsApp to bring up even a better and advanced feel and a touch of WhatsApp thus many people find them more appealing.

Mods are modifications of the normal WhatsApp app, with the addition of unofficial features, themes, fonts, languages, and settings that make them stand out as different from the original official WhatsApp app. They are developed by third-party developers that are not sponsored by WhatsApp.

Examples of Commonly Used WhatsApp Mods include,

  • WhatsApp Plus
  • GBWhatsApp
  • YoWhatsApp
  • FMWhatsApp
  • OGWhatsApp
  • WhatsApp Prime

These mods are only found on the web and not on the google play store. They can be downloaded from various modded apps websites and installed on the phone.

What These WhatsApp Mods Can Do.

They are developed to offer advanced features that normal WhatsApp users don’t have.

1.      Blue Ticking and Anonymity

With these mods, one can hide the blue ticks, double ticks , and online status. This means people don't actually understand if you are online or not and they also can’t know if you read their messages.

2.     Multiple Languages Support

Currently, WhatsApp doesn't support all languages, thus many people prefer to use these mods so as to enjoy WhatsApp in their own language.

3.      Security

With these mods, one can keep their private messages secure by locking them with either a fingerprint, password, or pattern. This helps one to avoid exposing their privacy or leaking their secret messages to the public. You can decide to either lock a certain conversation or the whole WhatsApp.

4.      Sharing

With Modded WhatsApp, you can share unlimited stories on statuses. This means you can send large and long videos on your status and share larger files and documents as compared to the normal WhatsApp which has a limit of up to 16Megabytes only.

5.      Saving

These mods can directly save other peoples ‘statuses to the gallery. The status can either be photos or videos but text statuses will be copied to the clipboard.

6. Font Styles, Themes & Colors

These mods can allow one to tweak the display font of their WhatsApp, change the colors including backgrounds and themes. Users can also change the User Interface (U.I) to be similar to IOS devices. The mods come with a few pre-installed themes and others that can be downloaded as add-ons from the settings.

Those are a few added advantages that this WhatsApp mod can perform. But I know you are asking yourself, are they worth keeping on your phone? Firstly these modded applications can’t be found on the official google play store and that means they are unofficial but not illegal and using them is not officially permitted. Let’s now talk about the risks of using these modded WhatsApp apps.

Risks and Dangers of Modded WhatsApp Apps

The risks might be too many to mention but we shall discuss a few of them and you can add others down in the comment section.

Risk of Phone Infection.

The less secured servers that host these WhatsApp mods unlike the official secured servers that host the official WhatsApp thus using them makes your device vulnerable to attacks by viruses that can later cause damage to your saved data. In case of any data loss or damage, you won’t be able to report to WhatsApp or anywhere for help but carry your own cross. The apps can only be downloaded over the web and many users get tricked and download fake apps that end up damaging their devices and leak their confidential information to the public.

Reduced Privacy

You might not be sure if there is a third party that reads your messages or other useful information you share on these modded WhatsApp apps. This is because the messages pass through third-party servers and important information like bank account details and passwords may be leaked to the public or you may be hacked. Usually, normal WhatsApp messages are end-to-end encrypted meaning only the sender and the receiver can read the message but not any third party person or app can decrypt the message.

No Support.

As I mentioned earlier, these mods are not officially available on google play store therefore they are not official hence updating them is difficult or getting help and support when things go wrong is also difficult and impossible. You have to search over the web for updated versions and for frequently asked questions (FAQs).

Getting Your Number Banned

You risk being banned if WhatsApp realizes your number is using these unofficial mods. Banning means losing your number on WhatsApp and you won’t use or sign up again with your number or else you get a new one. Forwarding messages limit can also get you banned. These mods increase the forward limit up to 250 contacts which can get you banned.

No Backing up Content

With the normal WhatsApp app or WhatsApp the business app, a user can back up their content on google drive and on the device therefore in case of changing devices or accidental data loss one can still recover their chat messages, photos, etc. WhatsApp mods cannot back up content on google drive but only on the device.

Conclusion

Those are just a few advantages and disadvantages of WhatsApp mods. You can decide to choose whether to keep using the mods or stay safe by using the official WhatsApp app or WhatsApp business app. You might enjoy the cool features today but you may not know what will happen tomorrow as you may face the disadvantages below. My advice is to stay to the normal original WhatsApp or use the cool WhatsApp business for your business account.
